The Rowan was one of the strongest Talents ever born, but she was also lonely and without family, friends -- or love. Then a telepathic message came from a distant world facing an alien threat, a message sent by an unknown Talent named Jeff Raven, and be it power, danger, or love -- the Rowan is about to meet her match.

Anne McCaffrey first created a universe where telepathy and psychokinesis exist in her Pegasus books, and this novel is the first of a five-book series set in that same universe. The series is usually referred to as The Tower and the Hive Series. The Rowan is a very talented orphan whose talent "erupts" when the rest of her community is wiped out in a landslide. She is called The Rowan because that was the name of the mining company where her family worked, and since no one alive knows what name she was given, they just call her The Rowan. Then she gets a telepathic message from a remote colony that they are being attacked by aliens.

I listened to this as an audio book.

his book reminded me strongly of The Crystal Singer. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought the Rowan was an interesting character. I think these would be enjoyed by teens. They are not as fleshed out as many of the books I read now. It is not a very long book, so I don't know why I was reluctant to start, maybe because I prefer to read all the books in a series in as close to one shot as possible.

I was a little disappointed in what happened to the Barquecat. From the cover, I thought this was a permanent installation on her life. I also wondered if Purza and Bagheera would have been found to actually have been energy-type beings that accompany children primes in order to steady them. Maybe something like this occurs in later books. Or maybe this is me running more plot-lines in someone …

This book wasn't half bad until I got the part when the powerful Rowan just happens to meet a 'sexy' man with the same powers she has, and defeats invading aliens in like 2 pages of drama. The sexy man's family and friends have just been killed, but apparently this is the perfect time for getting it on! The dialogue sounds like something you'd hear from an old man at a dive bar who's on his 8th beer, but apparently this is appealing: "Of course you are, sweetheart --- just push that nice little package out my way. Or is it too much for you?"

Ohhhh goddamnit McCaffrey I just don't know.

So the first like 3/4 of this book is actually surprisingly great and features some really good female characters and The Rowan is powerful and sometimes scary and ... it actually had me going like maybe it is actually possible for McCaffrey to write a good story

and then Rowan falls in love "at first sight" with this powerful stranger telepath dude and like

Okay, actually, I am okay with this, because you just like fused minds with him and so I can get on board with that, it's romantic, you know each other SO WELL now

But then The Rowan turns into this weepy girl-child, she gets all weird and needy

and it turns out he's MORE POWERFUL than her because OF COURSE HE IS otherwise how could he be lovingly protective of her

and then he mind-rapes her SO THAT'S COOL …
