you know you're deep in a show when you read a tie-in book that they wrote as if it was written by one of the characters in the show. I haven't really read mystery before, but I was hooked. was this Literature? probably not, but it was fun. great marketing, too.

Factitious writer Richard Castle has actually released a book. Heat Wave is a tie in book to the TV Show Castle published by Hyperion. Ghostwritten under the name “Richard Castle”, it is entirely in character from the dedication to the acknowledgments, although the latter references the principal cast and the show’s creators by name. The first half of the novel was released on the ABC website in weekly increments, but it must be purchased to be read in its entirety. Heat Wave was released on September 29, 2009, and debuted at #26 on the New York Times Best Seller list. In its 4th week on the list, Heat Wave broke into the top 10 at #6.

Would this book have ever gotten published without the TV show to build a fan-base first? Probably not.

Does that stop it from being a very fun and very, very cheesy read? Definitely not.

The ghost writer of the book does a good job writing a novel in a style that seems to fit Richard Castle's character. So for fans of the show, I would recommend this book. For people who've not watched the show and are just looking to read a good mystery? Go try some Nero Wolfe.
