When a mysterious entity starts hacking into social networks and chat rooms to instigate paranoia and violence in the real world, it's up to Steph and her new friend, Nell, to find a way to stop it—with the help of their benevolent AI friend, CheshireCat.
How can a book both have such an optimistic take on humanity and simultaneously make me terrified of all the apps on my phone
Ich habe mich nicht gelangweilt und wollte wissen, wie es ausgeht. Eine neue Erfahrung war auch, dass ich während des Lesens dachte "Kinder, macht doch nicht jeden Blödsinn, den euch das Internet sagt!" und "denkt doch auch mal an eure Privatsphäre!", so wie es anderen Leuten wahrscheinlich beim Lesen von Internetdystopien ergeht. Aber der zweite Band hat leider wenig Handlung und viel Handlungserklärung. Die ständigen Erklärungen sind notwendig, weil die zwei uneinigen AIs zu einem Erzählproblem führen, das es auch in vielen Büchern mit Magie gibt: Eigentlich können sie alles, knacken jede Verschlüsselung, haben Zugriff auf alle Daten. Aber dann doch wieder nicht, zum Beispiel können sie aus unklaren Gründen nicht in die Kommunikation mit der jeweils anderen AI gucken, und überhaupt scheint es keine Regeln dafür zu geben, was möglich ist und was nicht. "Aha aha, so geht es also jetzt zu bei den 16-Jährigen im Internet", dachte ich, "das ist ja alles so, wie ich es kenne." Dann habe ich nachgesehen und die Autorin ist so alt wie ich. (Ich hatte schon so einen Verdacht, als die Protagonistinnen eine Taschenlampe verwendeten, um nachts auf dem Campingplatz den Weg zum Klo zu finden, obwohl sie Handys haben.) Die ersten drei Viertel waren spannend, das letzte Viertel ist dann ein relativ lahmes Verknoten der 237 offenen Handlungsfäden. Bemerkenswertes Feature: Es kommt eine Katze vor, die auf S. 121 (von 304) Junge bekommt, und diese Katzenbabys kommen dann NIE WIEDER VOR. Also sie werden schon am Rande erwähnt, aber man lässst sie allein, es wird nicht mal ein Foto von ihnen gemacht, gar nichts! Ich möchte außerdem bemängeln, dass die Mutter der Protagonistin eine Top-Expertin für Internetsecurity ist und ein aberwitzig ungeeignetes Passwort verwendet (brute force …

Beginning where the previous book ends, Steph has enrolled in a new, hopefully more permanent, school. There, she meets another new girl, Nell, who had been homeschooled by her cult-religious mother. Nell's mother has apparently gone missing, forcing her to live with her estranged father and lived-in partners, and is now being sent to school.
Both are asked to sign up to a social network that, like Pokémon Go, gives them tasks to do separately and together in set locations to get 'points'. The tasks start out a bit unusual, but slowly turn serious when some tasks ask them to leave unusual messages for other people and even to steal items.

An interesting book about what may happen if an AI wants to spread chaos from behind the scenes, but let down by an ending that only tells you what happened without actually showing you.
Beginning where the previous book ends, Steph has enrolled in a new, hopefully more permanent, school. There, she meets another new girl, Nell, who had been homeschooled by her cult-religious mother. Nell's mother has apparently gone missing, forcing her to live with her estranged father and lived-in partners, and is now being sent to school.

Steph and the CatNet AI, CheshireCat, believe that there is another AI out there, and Steph suspects the other AI may be behind the social network and maybe other networks, including one that Nell uses to keep in touch with her religious cult group. Not only that, the other AI is deliberately creating conflicts between the social network groups. It is only when various clues fall into place that Steph, Nell, CheshireCat and the other people on CatNet realize what it all leading up to and have to work out how to stop it.
As with the previous book, this story is told from a first-person viewpoint, switching between the viewpoints of Steph, Nell, CheshireCat and the CatNet group (clowder). We get an account of the investigations and clues that gradually lead them to conclude what the other AI is planning to do and how to stop it.
Unfortunately, the actual steps taken to stop the AI are rushed, which somewhat deflates the ending of a book that features a number of interesting YA and adult characters who can accomplish things you wouldn't expect them to be able to do.
Still, an interesting near-future story of a world that has AIs that may or may not have the interests of people in mind.
