From a strong opening, Black immediately throws us into a world where magic is real and practitioners steal shadows for nefarious purposes.
The Book of Night tells the story of recovering thief, Charlie, who is drawn to trouble like a moth to a wool jumper.
Our protagonist has quit the stealing business and tends bar in a dive joint cum brothel cum underground shadow alteration parlour when, one night walking home after her car breaks down, she sees a murdered man with a shredded shadow and is dragged back into a life she tried hard to leave behind.

It was imaginative and thrilling. The rules of the magic system felt a little loose, almost like some of them were hastily added late.
I thought this was a clever and imaginative story. Holly Black always impresses, but it wasn't quite the page turner some of her YA books are. Still, I would read a sequel for sure.
