Set in the 80s during the height of the Satanic Panic, this briskly-paced horror story focuses on the intense friendship between two high school girls: Abby and Gretchen. Abby comes from a poor family and is self-conscious about her poor complexion. Gretchen is more confident and affluent, but feels incredibly stifled by her religious, Republican parents.

Early chapters take their time, showing how the pair met and walking the reader through some key moments in their friendship. Things rapidly escalate after they, along with other friends Margaret and Glee, have a sleepover at Margaret's cottage. After some skinny-dipping, the teens have a disappointing experiment with LSD, after which Gretchen disappears overnight. Abby finds her the next morning naked and alone in the woods, clearly agitated but with little memory of the previous night's events.

After the sleepover, Abby notices marked changes in her friend. She complains of phantom groping, refuses …

Rounding up to three stars. Not what I was expecting and lacking a lot in what made Horrorstor and, to a lesser extent, Southern Book Club so much fun to read. The ending is what bumped it up to three for me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it felt like a let down to most readers. The best part of the whole book was the Lemon Brothers, and especially what happens with Christian. That aspect of the book almost makes me want to give it 4 stars.

Well, now I have 'I Think We're Alone Now' stuck in my head.

My Best Friend's Exorcism isn't about demons, or spooky nightmares, or gore, or violence, or milkshakes. It has those things, but those things are just pillars to hold up the real point. This book is about the power of friendship, and its harsh realities. It's also about the really horrible parts of the 80's, from the Satanic Panic to the War on Drugs, rampant classism and poisonous interpretations of Christianity. And all of those aspects are used to augment the real point: Friendship, how it lasts, its realities, its pains, what can hurt it and what can hold it up.
