Publicada pela primeira vez em 1940, o enredo se passa em Bay City, Califórnia. Entre mansões em encostas com vista para o Pacífico e cassinos flutuantes está o clima ideal para assassinatos, chantagem, policiais racistas e corruptos, e um detetive particular tentando resolver crimes.

"Depois de algum tempo já me sentia melhor, mas não muito. Precisava de um drinque, precisava de uma porção de seguros de vida, precisava de umas férias, precisava de uma casa no campo. O que eu tinha era um sobretudo, um chapéu e uma arma. Coloquei os três e saí."

Assim como nos outros livros do autor, apesar de ser uma história de investigação você pode saber como acaba e mesmo assim voltar a ler o livro e aproveitar, pela ambientação, diálogos, personagens. Another great Philip Marlowe novel. Full of pathos and tragedy, but buoyed up by some of the most entertaining writing ever. I love how there are two different mysteries here that seem to be connected by coincidence until you get to the end and have that “aha, it all makes sense” moment. The characters are all great but I love Moose Malloy the most.

There is a lot of racism in this book which makes parts of it uncomfortable to read. The murder of a black character is not considered as important as the killing of a white one, and the main character spends a chapter mocking a Native American.

A stellar 'noir' detective thriller. I have only read two Raymond Chandler novels, so it is hard for me to say that this one is his best. However, I can say this is a very entertaining read. The plot twists, turns and offers an excellent array of characters. There are bad, bad guys and bad, good guys, not to mention good, bad guys. They are all there for you to enjoy.

I can say for certain, I plan to read more Philip Marlowe 'thrillers'.
