I've been reading Craig Johnson's Wyoming-set mysteries featuring Sheriff Walt Longmire since summer and enjoying them a great deal. Essentially I'm a sucker for the "decent man in an indecent job" trope. Longmire's voice is wry, self-effacing, and keenly observant, making him an excellent guide to one of the other main characters in the books, Wyoming itself.

In Junkyard Dogs, the 6th Longmire book, Johnson rummages around a bit in Carl Hiassan's spice cabinet. Wyoming-man can, it turns out, offer the same opportunities for humor as Florida-man. While Walt interacts with various vivid characters and deals with personnel problems in his department, the underlying mystery grows from quasi-comic beginnings to a rather violent conclusion. Despite the comic tone, this book has underlying sadness and seriousness. Walt is in a difficult job, and the consequences of that are taking their toll on him and the people around him. He's going through a well-earned slow-motion midlife crisis that's likely to be reflected in the upcoming volumes.

This is another interesting and sarcastic Longmire tale. Like many of the earlier stories in the series, this one makes you laugh, stress, and simply enjoy the ride.

This is one of my favorite series. I love Walt and Henry so much! Both are great characters: complex, loyal, and funny.

This one keeps us close to home, with Walt investigating an accident, family conflicts, and murders. Absaroka County is a tough place to live, for sure. All of our favorites are back in this one: Sancho, Lucien, Vic, and Dog. What starts out as a family feud quickly escalates into a much larger conspiracy, and I had no idea whodunnit until it was spelled out to me, in typical Johnson fashion. He's the master of the plot twist. I never figure it out, but once he tells us who and why, everything makes sense. He seems to be channeling Agatha Christie.

Another really great installment. Read this series!

The writing's pretty decent, but... but... didn't really catch me, I guess. Fun fluff when I was expecting more.

If you liked the previous Walt Longmire books, you should like this one, too. He stays at home in Wyoming this time -- no Philadelphia alleys. There are quirky characters, soul-searching, and lots of funny stories and sass. Perhaps he got a bit self-conscious about that, as this dialog shows up at one point:[return][return]'Is everyone in this county a smart-ass?'[return]My deputy sipped her coffee. 'Pretty much.'[return][return]He did skip the usual mystic Indian vision, though he does get just a little misty eyed when Henry Standing Bear does some tracking.
