Absolutely bloody fantastic. Best read on the year so far, and I'm eleven months in.
The game is afoot!
London's geniuses are being picked off by a vicious killer, and Emma Bannon, a sorceress in the service of the Empire, must protect the next target, Archibald Clare. Unfortunately he's more interested in solving the mystery of the murders than staying alive . . .
In a world where illogical magic has turned the Industrial Revolution on its head, Bannon and Clare will face dark sorcery, cannon fire, high treason and the vexing problem of reliably finding hansom cabs in the city.

Interesting storyline but somehow I couldn't get into the book.
This is the first in a new series featuring sorceress Emma Bannon and mentath Archibald Clare in a Victorian era that never was. A bit Sherlockian (Clare) and very steam punk. Lots of dashing action & suspense, and fun and imaginative magic world building. A wee bit emo and some sexual tension, but after all it is Victorian.
A steampunk Sherlock Holmes-type story in which Emma, a Prime Sorceress, and Archibald, a mentath, must work together to find out who is trying to destroy the Queen of England. I must admit, I didn't see the Sherlock Holmes homage right away, which probably makes me one of the most susceptible readers on the planet. I did get a little tired of the overuse of the word "deduct" after a while, though. Pure entertainment, which I needed, so I did enjoy it.
