Another fine mess

The Chronicles of St Mary's seem to always be an easy read and this one is no exception.

And this one goes through the normal romp in the first part (that ends in a fairly big change to a relationship), a perilous foe in the second and then throws in a curve ball for the ending.

And I kind of almost wish that it setup the curve ball in this book and left the curve ball itself for a later book.

But curious to see where it goes.

I like this series -- Jodi Taylor is good at creating magnetic characters. I'm still puzzling out the construction of these books, and still waiting for a dangling story line from book #2 to develop. Looking forward to reading the next dozen of these!

This is probably closer to a 2.5. This book took forever to get to the point. It starts in the middle of something interesting and then takes fully half of the book to get back to it.

I didn't super care for the twist with Leon and I cared even less for the twist at the end. Other people around here seem to agree and say the reboot is good for the series, which I hope is true, because I find myself getting tired of both Max and Taylor's writing style. So we'll see.

Okay. That was an ending. And also, cliffhanger. Now what? I sincerely hope things are going to get straightened out in the next few books, because this? This is... Hmm... Author's choice, I suppose.

Still a very good book, though, and I will definitely continue with it, but I now do feel as if there are certain conditions that have to be met for me to enjoy it as much as the first books. And that's not really very nice, actually. On the other hand, maybe I'll come around and suddenly find I've accepted it.

We'll see.

Sceptical (and a bit wary) cat is sceptical (and a bit wary).
