The perfect marriage? Or the perfect lie? Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do. You'd like to get to know Grace better. But it's difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart. Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn't work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.
Meh.
I was expecting a story of an abused wife that slowly unfolded over time...but that's definitely not what I got. Even though I was slightly disappointed about the early reveal of Jack's predilections, I found that I could not stop listening to this book and enjoyed how it ended. This book will not make you think, but it will keep you entertained.
Read this book for Book Club. Ugh, really not my cup of tea. The writing was okay but not outstanding. The subject matter was distasteful. The only reason I actually finished it was...you know...Book Club...
If you like some sort of anti fairy story you might like this. Prince Charming in his wonderful world turns odd. I found it contrived and the central character is one of 'motiveless malignity'. Perhaps it will appeal to some form of readership but for me I struggled to believe any of it and found it highly derivative of other material.
The one thing I didn't like about this book was the time question – it was very difficult to tell when things happened in relation to each other. Probably about two thirds of the ways through I figured it out, but I didn't like the way the timing was done.
ON THE OTHER HAND –
The book kept me nervous and anticipatory. The likelihood of whole situation for the main character was so untenable, and it really kept me biting my knuckles! The unexpected conclusion was touching, and it made me cry (not that that's so difficult these days, but…). What I got the timing things sort of figured out, the book was much more enjoyable in some sense, but it was still a totally unnerving situation! I never heard of the author before, but I am likely to look for her!
I kind of knew how this book was going to end, but getting there was so amazing. I adored this book!
Jack and Grace appear to have a perfect life. They even have the photos to prove it. After a whirlwind romance they have settled into a beautiful house, perfectly landscaped and very private. Jack has even offered to have Grace's sister come and live with them after she leaves school.
Just don't look in the basement.
From all outward appearances Grace has everything a woman could possibly want. Yet in her private thoughts Grace wonders how Jack can appear so normal and thinks "there should be something -pointed ears or a pair of horns-- to warn people of his evilness"
Only Grace knows what goes on behind closed doors, and what she will ultimately have to do to protect herself and her sister.
The thing that strikes me the most about this compelling psychological thriller is the pervasive feeling of foreboding that struck me almost immediately, and intensified through out …

The thing that strikes me the most about this compelling psychological thriller is the pervasive feeling of foreboding that struck me almost immediately, and intensified through out the story. I am most impressed that the author was able to make me feel so uneasy and to keep up that intensity all the way to the end.
