Letters from a stoic

A good collection of Seneca's letters, which were more likely meant as publicly-read essays than letters themselves. Not all of them can be found here; this collection has approximately forty of them. Yet, for a sense of Stoic philosophy, it's well-worth the read.

Idealism is the killer of wisdom, it's a shame.

This book is great and I think if we applied stoic advice in our lives we'd be better off, but Seneca often goes on and on about idealist and frankly wrong conceptions that he has, and then elevates that BS to philosophy

Classic Stoic lessons by Seneca have heavier judgments compared to Meditation by Marcus Aurelius. It values principles and despises those who succumb to pleasure and pain. I recommend you to read and think carefully about each sentence, as Seneca said don’t approach philosophy as if you are going to a theater just to please your ears. Practice. Philosophy after all is not a theoretical subject to debate about but a skill you apply to your life.

Definitely not as engaging as Meditations, but still interesting, as much for what it reveals about upper class Roman life as it does about Stoicism.

Heated tubs connected to the ocean, criticism of "night owls", debates about real locations of places mentioned in the Odyssey that we're still having today, and people gossiping about Sappho's sex life.

It really makes me feel like not much has changed between now and then other than the technology of distributing information.
