Sayers. In tegenstelling tot het werk van bijvoorbeeld Agatha Christie treedt haar protagonist Lord Peter Wimsey nauwelijks naar de voorgrond: Sayers legt het zwaartepunt van haar verhaal bij de omgeving, in het bijzonder bij de negen kerkklokken van het fictieve dorp Fenchurch St Paul in het oosten van Engeland. The nine tailors is daarom evengoed een ode aan de campanologie als een spannende whodunnit; de echte hoofdpersonen zijn misschien wel Batty Thomas en Tailor Paul.

‘Why bring Batty into it? Batty is a bell. Tailor Paul is a bell. Paul Taylor is a person, because he gets a letter. You can’t send letters to a bell. If you did you’d be batty. Oh, bother!’
Aspecten die opvallen zijn de sfeer, zelfs al is die soms wat al te kneuterig, het mooie maar soms archaïsche taalgebruik en de inventieve plotwendingen. Aangezien Sayers een interessant geval van shellshock in haar verhaal verwerkt, vroeg ik me af of Anjet Daanje haar werk kende toen zij aan [b:De herinnerde soldaat|49014054|De herinnerde soldaat|Anjet Daanje|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1582820144l/49014054.SY75.jpg|74436449] begon. Ook is The nine tailors geloofwaardiger dan veel andere detectiveverhalen, al was het maar doordat de inspecteur van politie nu eens niet wordt weggezet als een onnozele hals.
Hoewel ik me niet tot het genre bekeer, vond ik dit boek beslist meer dan een afleiding.

Dorothy L. Sayers’ detective novels have been labeled as literary crime writing. I couldn’t agree more: reading The nine tailors is more than reading a whodunnit, it is reading about rural life in early 20th century England, and about the art of change ringing and customs like the death knell. I enjoyed the book for the scenery, but I also appreciated the exciting plot and the fact that the crime story is more believable than many other detective stories.
