I picked up this book due to the last Miyazaki film. At first, I wasn't sure that there was much relation between these works other than perhaps spirit? But upon finishing, I'm no longer sure and will need to see the film again.

As to the translation, it seems quite beautiful. The descriptions are poetic and succinct. In general, there is an impressive "compression" in the text, where a lot of ideas appear throughout the fairly brief text without cluttering the work. Oddly, the book reminded me of my own times in South Korea as a child - especially Uragawa's character.

The book is concerned about human progress, but it's not a capitalistic kind of progress. In fact the book highlights in many ways how underdeveloped we are in the same way Ivan Illich points out in Tools for Conviviality. Perhaps the flaw of Tools is that it's quite hard …

The basis for the impending 宮崎駿「miyazaki hayao」swan song film?

As mentioned in the title, this book is the basis for the purported final animated film directed by 宮崎駿「miyazaki hayao」due out later this year in 2023.

Which is to say: I need to redouble my efforts and source the text in its original language before I give it a fair review.

After all, reading a translation, is really reading the words …

This is a remarkable book, it has an interesting history, written as part of a series of books for young Japanese nationals, it shows them how to behave in the world, how to become a great human and how you should treat others. I found it really inspiring but at the same time it made me realise how world weary I have become, each time I go on social media there is always somebody showing their worst side and I just wanna sit them down and make them have a read of this book.

The book is centred around Copper a 15 year old school boy, we follow him as he makes friends, deals with bullies and cares for those who are considered outcasts. His Dad has recently died and his uncle has stepped up to be the father figure in Copper’s life, the uncle is the sort of person …
