I found the book particularly interesting for the early years in David’s career and the awesome musicians he met and played with along the way. The prose is simple and it sometimes feels like he tried too hard to be polite and avoided raising waves - a solid contrast to Dave Mustaine’s autobiography I’ve read long ago. The Nirvana era takes about one chapter - you’ll probably find other better suited books if that’s what you’re looking for.

“I have never been one to collect “stuff,” I do collect moments.”
― Dave Grohl, The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music

Dave collected a lot of moments in his life and happily shared a lot of them in this book. It's mostly anecdotal and he explains his journey and choices. Very interesting and fun to read.
He isn't as reflective as I would have wished, and doesn't mentioned real fuck ups and the learnings from that. I know, it's hard to reflect on oneself.

The main take-away is that Dave is a unique being and is enjoying his life living it on his own term. And that's inspiring.

Highly recommend the audio book as he narrates it himself!

Oh rock (auto)biographies, I thought I broke it off with you. “I want to read more intellectually challenging material” I said to myself. ”I need to grow and change as a reader, as a person”. “All these rock (auto)biographies are the same, I’m done.” I asserted. But, rock (auto)biography, it seems I just can’t quit you. I saw this at the library and, I know, I know, I should have just walked on by. But no, I picked it up and read the inside flap and Dave Grohl said something like “I measure my life in musical increments” and I thought “So do I! I do that too!” so against my better judgment, not being a particular fan of Dave Grohl’s music, I took this book home with me.

The book is not bad. It’s just not the book I wanted to read. I thought Dave Grohl was going to …

I read this book while traveling so I ended up reading it start to finish over the course of a long boat trip. The book was an easy page turner and I did not dislike it. But, as others have said it is pretty light on detail in most cases. There is more detail about things like where Paul McCartney hangs out in new Orleans or what Joan Jett wears around the house that things like how Dave met his wife. All in all I am glad I read it, but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone other than a hardcore fan.

Truly amazing book that tells the extraordinary life of Dave Grohl. I enjoyed every chapter, specially the choices he made at the many crossroads he faced. I found it truly inspiring but I do have to say that I am a bit biased because I’m a pretty big fan of Dave Grohl and the bands he has been or is a part of. If you like this book you should definitely watch his documentaries, or vice a versa.

I feel that for music to have some impact on you it needs to have been part of the soundtrack of your life. For some reason, the Foo Fighters (1995) music never featured in the soundtrack of my life, so now on listening to their back catalogue, only one or two songs were familiar to me. I do have the memory of buying Nevermind (1991) when it came out in because I shared the purchase of the CD with a friend because we weren't sure if we liked any of the other songs apart from Smells Like Teen Spirit. I had the CD for a couple of weeks and then passed it on to him. I'm not sure who has it now.

With the death of Taylor Hawkins, Dave Grohl's name must've come up a lot and somehow I started getting recommendations on YouTube for his interviews. So watching Dave …

I like Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters, and the book was interesting. But, I can't say it kept me engaged. After a while, I was almost tired of him going on about how the next famous person was his idol, and was the reason where he was today. It's cool that he still sees other artists as inspirational. But, it started to feel like he had a list of celebrities that he needed to include, and was just ticking off the names in the list.
