Superheroic daddy issues: having them, losing them, becoming them etc. King is continuing to establish himself as one of comics great writers, and the 9 panel format is very reminiscent of Moore. The art is vibrant but scrapily realistic. There's a distinct riff on classic and biblical stories combined with a mundane reflection on being a mature adult. Sometimes the contrast between his home life and epic day job is a bit too discongruous, but then I'm all too familiar with the struggles of having young children who WILL NOT STAY ASLEEP. ahem.

A surreal blend of the fantastical and the normal.
This book took a new approach to the New Gods, and it just didn't connect with me at all. I get what they were trying to do, but the war never felt real, and given the world-shattering conflict and death that surrounds the main characters, their blase attitude outside of that conflict, dealing with diapers and stage performances, etc., never rings true. Maybe I needed to be a bigger New Gods fan to vibe with this title.

So so... definitely trying to do too much, I felt. There were parts that I felt went a little too far in terms of how dark it got. I wanted to put it down more than once.
