Review of 'A Bend in the Road' on 'Goodreads'
3 stars
I read this book as a gentle let down after all the melodrama of the second book of the Games of Thrones series. It certainly succeeded in that, being mentally undemanding and with a lot less blood and guts, not to mention nicer people. But maybe it was a bit too far in that direction. The characters are portrayed so idyllically in the first half that it was hard to believe in them, everyone is friends and there is not even any discrimination worthy of mention in the Southern US village where it is set. The plot is also fairly straightforward and it is clear quite early on 'who done it', if only because there is rather a limited cast of characters to choose from. Still, I guess when it comes to it, I'm not really the target audience for this book, it is a bit unfair to criticise it …
