City of Girls

Wow! Was für ein tolles Buch! Ich verstehe gar nicht, warum ich das nicht schon früher gelesen habe, denn auch "Vom Wesen der Dinge..." hat mir damals ja sehr gut gefallen! Gilbert schreibt so, dass ich dachte, alle Figuren hätten wirklich existiert und habe nach der (fiktiven) Edna gegoogelt. Genauso ging es mir beim "Wesen", aber auch bei "Evelyn Hugo", das ja auch in einem ähnlichen Künstlersetting spielt.
Ich hab das Buch sooo gern gelesen, ich mochte die schillernden Figuren in der New Yorker Theaterwelt der 1940ger, vor allem Tante Peggy und natürlich Olive. Und Benjamin. Und Celia. Und Onkel Billie - hach! Etwa nach 2/3 des Buches gibt es eine Zäsur, nach der sich Vivians Leben etwas anders entwickelt, als man denken könnte und das ganze Buch wird deutlich ruhiger - aber auch das hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
Ich bin im nu durch 500 Seiten geflogen und bin arg traurig, dass es vorbei ist. Ich möchte am liebsten direkt noch ein Buch lesen, das in New York spielt - jemand Tipps?
Dieses Buch bekommt definitiv volle 5 Sterne und ist eines meiner Jahreshighlights in 2024 bisher.

Hmm. I'm a sucker for historic fiction set in NYC. And I love coming of age stories. So the idea of a young woman getting kicked out of Vassar and seeking refuge in her quirky aunt's theatre company in Manhattan = the perfect summer read. I also thought it was clever to structure it as a letter to a stranger who has asked the protagonist to clarify her relationship with the stranger's father... that served as a great framing device for the story, imparting a touch of mystery to the overall book. So why am I not giving this book five stars? Two reasons: 1) The protagonist is vapid, so it's hard to care about her; 2) The book seems preoccupied with (and in your face about) sex. I'm not prudish and I appreciate that she's empowering a female character to own her sexuality, but it just didn't feel very eloquently executed.
