Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a children's novel written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney. It is the first book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The book is about a boy named Greg Heffley and his attempts to become popular in his first year of middle school. Diary of a Wimpy Kid first appeared on FunBrain in 2004, where it was read 20 million times. The abridged hardcover adaptation was released on April 1, 2007. The book was named a New York Times bestseller, among other awards and praise. The book was adapted into a live action feature film, which released on March 19, 2010, and an animated film adaptation was released on Disney+ on December 3, 2021.
Not the best of its genre but it certainly became the most well-known. Greg is mostly unlikable with little to compensate.

Everyone has that teacher at school who made us sit through recess because someone did something wrong and they had to admit.
Everyone at some point in time unwillingly went to a family gathering or temple, when you would have much rather been at your home all day long or spent your time playing with a friend.
Everyone who is the youngest in the family at some trip had to sit at the crummy space in the vehicle or share your bed since you were the tiniest.
This book brings the funny side of such incidents and many more.
My most favorite joke in the book was the prank pulled by Rodrick on Greg. He fools Greg on April fool's day and hits him with paintball TWICE. (Poor thing, but also LOL!!!!)

On a serious note, the kids in these books get involved in household chores way earlier, which is extremely appreciable. If I were to trade lives with Greg I might have been grumpier. But reading about it is funny. Maybe all of our lives are a joke when seen from a distance.
I found it tough to get past what a horrible person Greg was, very selfish most of the way through the book. He makes Horrid Henry look like a well behaved kid. I didn't really like the writing style either, it reminded me of Pop idol and Britain's got talent, it has that same level of bullying which makes it acceptable to laugh at somebody who either isn't the normal, looks funny or is mildly delusional.
One thing I noticed whilst reading this to my daughter was that she laughed hardest when things go against Greg. She seemed to enjoy it so it gets 2 stars.
Bad news is she now wants to start book 2.

For a kid's book, I enjoyed it. I laughed out loud several times and, as an added bonus, finally got some of the jokes my 9 year-old son has been telling me.
