The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. On page 210, pretty fun so far. The romance is well written and Cassiopea is cool. Not too weak, not too strong. I hate Martin, though. Don't really care what happens to him.
Rather typical gods-unworshipped-fading in power. That seems a little tired.
This book picked-up about 3/4 thru. The competition was precisely the right length, well-paced, and had some enjoyable twists. The ending is great; one of the best conclusions to a female character's coming-of-age stories I've read.
Gods of Jade and Shadow
What I liked about GoJaS (ouh cool abreviation):
-The setting of the 20's in Mexico, I never read (I think) a book taking place in Mexico and it was refreshing !
-The Mayan mythology, again, I never read anything about Mayan mythology and it was easy and fun to discover more of it with this book^^
-The main characters, Casiopea and Hun-Kamé were great, individually (Casiopea is my fav, a girl who did not have an easy life and was brave and strong , je l'adore), and together (interesting relationship to say the least lol)
What I liked less:
-Ending a little rushed
-POVs less interesting than others ( and I wouldn't have said no to at least one more female character^^)
Im not saying much to avoid spoiling as much as I can, but I recommend it, it was short and sweet!
