One of the most prescient books I’ve ever read - discussion of the utopian future in which sexuality is not a big issue, in which people love comfortably and sustainably, in which reparations for past wrongs is policy, all balanced with a recognition of this as a future which may not come to pass (and a flash of the dystopia, sharply similar to the world we are now in). Leaves you feeling worried that we continue to take the wrong path without thinking.

Mattapoisett, says Marge Piercy in the introduction to the new edition of Women on the Edge of Time, is born of the hunger for something better, but it relies on hope as the engine for imagining such a future. Like most women’s utopias, Mattapoisett is profoundly anarchist and aims at integrating people back into the natural world and eliminating power relationships. It was a society in which sex was available, accepted and non-hierarchical – and totally divorced from income, social status, power.

I think that Piercy sacrificed great storytelling in order to convey a political messasge. I admire her attempt to fit her very thorough social analysis into creative, fiction writing, but I think the story itself could have been better written, and sometimes verged on being a bit corny and predictable. I still recommned it, though.
