Oh my. I first read this series over 30 years ago, when I was a young teen and I loved it so much. Even then I had a feeling that the writing wasn't great, because Hohlbein re-uses tropes, ideas and phrases a lot. But the ideas were so much fun and I could easily ignore the shortcomings of the series. These days that doesn't work, sadly. It was quite difficult to finish the book and I have no desire to revisit the rest of the series.
