Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the novelization of the 2015 film of the same name. The author, Alan Dean Foster, also wrote Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, the 1976 novelization of the first Star Wars film.

Some awkward prose, perhaps induced by the need to produce a novel-length story from the screenplay, but definitely readable. Worth a read if you have some time and want a few insights into the main characters of the new canon.

It's hard to navigate the book/movie line. I'm a tough judge, as I want continuity between them. While it was nice to see certain areas expanded on, things which were notably different from the movie stopped me from getting into it. This might have been heightened by the fact it was an audiobook so there were voices and sound effects. Also, I felt like the author was trying to set Rey up for romance and I didn't like that, so, biased. However, getting a deeper look at TFA was really really great. :)

Wow, I really enjoyed the film but this was terrible. It is pretty faithful to the film, meaning there is nothing different here (except for lots and lots of description). In hindsight, you see just how little plot there was in the film but in that form, it didn't matter so much. Here, it stands out like an vast canyon.
The biggest problem, however, was the writing was just terrible. I don't know if I've read much Alan Dean Foster, but apparently he isn't a terrible author. But the writing here is clunky, plodding and flat. And all of it is written in the style of a film trailer, high drama, crash, bam.
More annoyingly, every action was repeated over and over, 'she did this but then soon she was going to do this other thing because of that and because of the thing she just did she was going …

If you are looking for something deeper than the film, don't bother, you won't find it here, just a frustrating transcription of the film.

STAR WARS SPOILERS
I enjoyed this book. It was not quite as good as the novelization for Episode III (Which was so much better than the actual film), but did an excellent job.
It followed the movie very closely and didn't extrapolate very deeply into the characters, however it does add some additional context scenes that we don't see in the movie. Most notably, we see some introduction scenes with Leia, and get more context and insight into the resistance, and details about the Hosnian system. We also get the story of how Poe gets off Jakku.
Additionally, the scenes don't play out 100% like they do in the movie, some are better some worse. The best of which provides much better information about my largest story issue within the movie, namely how R2D2 has the remaining map fragments needed to find Luke. It doesn't fix it completely, but goes …
