I LOVED LOVED this book. Queer love underneath a Bachelor like reality show. Mysterious mythical creature lurking in the background, people disappearing. Perfectly written feminist horror thriller. Unlike the other one I reviewed today, this one does not have people doing silly things and saying "oops" while dying.
Delightful! A hilarious critique of reality TV, absurd and unrealistic- but I just loved this quirky little book and its spree of carnage. So much mutilation. So much laughter.
Das Buch beginnt (minus die ersten Foreshadowing Seiten) mit knapp 60% weitestgehend üblichem Bachelor-esquem Datingshow-Inhalt. Die Charaktere sind ganz ok charakterisiert und ich mochte, das allen die Chance gegeben wurde aus der Ichperspektive ganz sympathisch und nachvollziehbar rüber zu kommen. Leider ist dieser Teil auch sterbenslangweilig. Gestorben wird dann in den folgenden ~40%, wo es auf einmal sehr gory zugeht. Gut, das wusste man vorher, aber es ist doch ne krasse Wendung. Die ich wirklich toll gefunden hätte, bliebe die Story nicht trotz des Gemetzels weitestgehend schnarchig. Es wird viel an Hintergründen über die Insel angedeutet aber nicht ausgeführt und entweder habe ich was verpasst oder da waren Logikfehler. Das Metzeln durch das queere Monster fänd ich theoretisch ja prima und ich schätze es so sehr, wenn viele Charas abtreten, die man gerade so nah kennen gelernt hat. Das traut sich kaum ein Buch und das unterläuft so schön Erwartungen. …

Extra star because it was fun. Very weird, quick read, with just enough social commentary to keep me interested.
Just kind of... eh. The split POVs mean you spend a lot of time with people who exist to die, and the last minute attempts to humanize them before they are brutally murdered. The plot is telegraphed really strongly before it kicks off, and it takes a looong time to kick off. I can't tell if this book is an indictment of... what, consumer culture? Reality TV? It fails as both.
