Why the hell did I read this? There was only one reason and that was what a booktuber once said. I won’t mentioned her name but she’s known for her sarcasm, irony and comedic exaggeration. I knew that she was exaggerating about that book as well, but nonetheless, my curiosity grew and I wanted to know if that part of the book she mentioned was true.
Well... i was deceived. There was no such thing that the YouTuber mentioned. I honestly feel so betrayed, haha, oof. The reason itself was ridiculous af, but I wanted to know and now that I know — that it didn’t happen — I really pity myself. To have wasted my time over sth like that.
Adding to that, the book is cringe as f* and I really really questioned my own sanity on why I continued reading. Why the hell waste my time like …

Adding to that, the book is cringe as f* and I really really questioned my own sanity on why I continued reading. Why the hell waste my time like that? I knew who’d end up in a romance, by the moment the characters met. It’s just so damn cliche that I wanted to throw up multiple times throughout the book. Why do hetero shippings always have to be so damn toxic and cliche? I really really hate males who interact like that with females, and I really really hate those typical female teenager protagonists, who are written to be badass and perfect with cliche flaws, yet when there’s a handsome guy around, they get weak af and only wait for the wolf to claim its prey.
I guess apart from the reason I mentioned above, the writing style of the author also was good enough to continue reading. Hell, it was her talent that made me want to finish the book, even upon knowing all too well how it would end (bc of all the cliches). I actually feel a bit sorry for the author to waste her amazing talent with such a low book.
The plot and world-building in itself — not including the flat characters — are actually quite good and worth to explore. I wish she would’ve focused on that more, than throw an unnecessary teenage romance in there, as found in most YA fantasy books. It’s always the same with these books and I’m so sick of it. Is it too much to ask for a fantasy book to be without romance?

Well, not so in this world. In this world, faeries once enslaved humanity in ways analogous to how white people treated black people during South Africa's apartheid. Until hundreds of years ago, when we fought back, resulting in a protracted, bloody war that almost wiped out our race. Eventually, the two parties agreed to a treaty, which would see faeries taking control of a significant portion of the world, on the other side of a great invisible Wall that nobody from either side could cross.
That's the premise behind A Court of Thorns and Roses, as we meet Feyre, a young lady forced to hunt every day to keep her destitute family alive.
It's a great story, and I think it fits quite nicely into the Epic Fantasy genre. The book is young …

That's the premise behind A Court of Thorns and Roses, as we meet Feyre, a young lady forced to hunt every day to keep her destitute family alive.
It's a great story, and I think it fits quite nicely into the Epic Fantasy genre. The book is young adult, but that doesn't mean the world is tame or the author pulls her punches. In fact, it can be very gruesome when it needs to be.
It's also a romance, and easily identified as such. There's lots of detail in the descriptions of how the characters FEEL about each other, and there's sex too, which is as detailed as it needs to be without being overtly erotic. I think it strikes a nice balance - I'm not usually a fan of romance, so I had some misgivings about this book. But I needn't have worried: the romance is appropriate. It's also believable. I've read books before where "boy meets girl" on page one, and by page three they're ready to spend the rest of their lives together. That doesn't happen in this book.
I have two issues with the story, however. Firstly, there are certain words used, certain phrases turned, which strike me as... too modern for the time period in which the book is meant to be set. I can't put my finger on it, but as I read each of these, my mind paused and sat on them for a few moments. "Um, I'm not sure those characters would say that," I thought. And that's bad, because it rips me out of the story, destroying my immersion.
Secondly, about 65% through the book, there's a long chapter with a lot of backstory. And it's very "info-dumpy". My eyes glazed over, and I think I skimmed MOST of that chapter. Turns out, I don't think I needed it at all, because I picked up all the information I needed during the rest of the book.
All in all, though, I think I'm going to add the next book in this series. One more book, just to be absolutely sure where I like it or not.

Ich hatte wirklich meine Startschwierigkeiten mit dem Buch, die wahrscheinlich daraus resultierten, dass ich von Throne of Glass alles andere als begeistert war. Auch dieses Buch hatte ganz klar seine Schwachpunkte, aber ich bin eben relativ leicht zu besänftigen, wenn mich das Ende eines Buches wirklich überzeugen kann. Da vergesse ich gern mal die Längen oder, dass ich die Liebe zwischen Tamlin und Feyre nicht sehr glaubwürdig fand. Ich hab einfach nicht gespürt, weshalb sie sich für den jeweils anderen begeistern konnten... Aber wie gesagt ^^ Ich freue mich jedenfalls schon auf Band 2 und bin gespannt, welche Enthüllungen er mit sich bringt.
