Review of 'Wanderers' on 'Goodreads'

Wow. I think I had to renew this book four times from the library to finish it. I borrowed it via my Kindle with no idea what the page count was, but I wasn't surprised to learn that it's 800+ pages. In many ways it reminded me of Reamde by Neal Stephenson – compelling plot, multiple story lines that end up weaving together, interesting science – AND the need for a more heavy-handed editor to shrink that page count. Even so, it was a fun read, despite the very meta sense of reading about a pandemic in the midst of an actual pandemic.

I arrived for the apple reviews, stayed for the novel!

I read this in 2021 after a year of events oddly reminiscent of the situation in the story. While some of the political context would already have been in place, the author would not have the context of the pandemic at the time of writing and publishing, making it a little more chilling to read now. It is a sweeping sci-fi story with an atmosphere similar to something like The Stand, much warmer than The Road, with maybe a touch of a Michael Crichton twist mixed in, but all Chuck Wendig. It is definitely in the humor and style I've encountered following the author through social media, which I was hoping for. This is my first of his novels and I intend to read more.

Maybe not the best book to read in 2020, but I read it on a whim and I'm glad I did it when I did it. It made the book feel like it carried a bit of extra weight, or baggage, or something when I could compare it to what's going on around me. You have a disease sweeping the world. You have a small group (the Flock) immune to the disease, walking like a sleepwalker to an unknown destination and guarded by a group of family and friends (the Shepherds). Then you have society unrest all around them, as fears and hatred become front and center. Things end for America, poorly.

This was a hard book to review. I really wanted to like it, to the point where I caught myself trying to rationalize myself to even just 4 stars "just because". In the end though, while I liked …
