Em Farther Away, encontrei um Jonathan Franzen mais íntimo e vigilante: um escritor que observa o mundo e, ao mesmo tempo, observa a si mesmo observando. Acompanhando suas viagens e lutos, senti o fio que costura os ensaios: a busca por atenção verdadeira em um tempo de distrações fáceis. O texto-título, na ilha de Alejandro Selkirk, liga a solidão de Robinson Crusoé ao luto do amigo escritor; ali, percebi como a paisagem amplia o silêncio e transforma lembrança em rito.

Ao ler sobre pássaros caçados no Mediterrâneo, doeu-me a precisão serena com que Franzen descreve a violência. Sua paixão ornitológica não é hobby, é ética: olhar, nomear, proteger.
