Iolanthe Seabourne is an elemental mage, orphaned at childbirth. Her care taker is drug-addled, having lost his position as a respected academic. She desires a simple life as an academic herself. Titus is Prince of House Elberon, and seeks to overthrow Atlantis' rule from his people. He knows that any day he will see a mage call down lightning, starting his path to his death. He envisions a male mage dying by his side.

Iolanthe, in a desperate attempt to restore a light spell, casts lightning, setting off a sequence of events that ensnares her in a greater plot with Titus, who attempts to rescue her before Atlantis takes her away. He's surprised she's a girl. She's confused what's going on.

A young-adult fantasy that doesn't spend all book world-building, The Burning Sky is a page-turner that features elements of romance. An enjoyable read.
