When I started reading this I didn't fully realize it was a new story in a world that apparently has 43 other books. So there were a lot of things that Lackey didn't bother explaining, likely assuming that readers would already be familiar with the world. I, of course, was not, so I struggled a bit in the beginning to get my bearings, but overall this was a fun book. I always enjoy fantasy books where things that don't usually have a voice get a voice, like here with all the animals that Perry can talk to (another example is Piers Anthony's [b:Castle Roogna|96977|Castle Roogna (Xanth, #3)|Piers Anthony|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388701282l/96977.SY75.jpg|1387490] where the main character's magical talent is talking with inanimate objects).
If I had a complaint it would be that it took a long time to get to the "action" of the book, and even calling it action is a …
