It's a bit of an power fantasy—modern man (at least for the time it was written) goes back in time, civilizes the cretins, and none of the primitive savages can stand against his just, scientific, rational rule. I think Twain almost forgot to write any real conflict into this book. Still, it gets a little tense towards the end, and it is very well written for such a power fantasy.
