2022 Re-read
"That's what was is," Cobb told me. "A bunch of sorry, desperate fools on both sides, just trying to stay alive. That's the part that those stories you love leave out, isn't it? It's always more convenient when you can fight. dragon. Something you don't have to worry you'll start caring about."
This book definitely deserved a reread because I forgot a bunch of details. The Sanderlanche in the last bit comes rushing at you and then it's done.
I'm excited to read the novellas that were released before Skyward 3 to help fill the gaps when Spensa was away because the short interludes with Jorgen weren't enough.
Sanderson continues to impress with the quantity, and most importantly, quality he publishes and Starsight is no exception. As the book started out I braced for disappointment and that the sequel would be more of the same, the scope contained …

Sanderson continues to impress with the quantity, and most importantly, quality he publishes and Starsight is no exception. As the book started out I braced for disappointment and that the sequel would be more of the same, the scope contained within Detritus or numerous other worries and I am happy to report that Sanderson meet and exceeded my expectations.
It doesn't take long for the story to accelerate and give you an idea of where it's heading.
Starsight is an easy to digest story with similar humor and action to Skyward. However, what impressed me throughout the book was the larger thread of themes and questions that were raised, and they were done in a manner to not stand out or detract from the story. There were multiple times I had to pause, absorb and reflect on a passage or question.
I should never doubt Sanderson's ability to craft a fun, unique and connected story but he does it again! Elements from Skyward are essential here and yet Starsight opens up the world/galaxy and possibilities beyond what I ever expected.
Quite a change from Starward, where we had a small cast and a limited world. Now the story moves out into the galaxy. I liked that change. Spensa is still over-the-top, the banter with M-bot is still rather annoying and the story lacks depth. But hey, it's still fun. Overall a fun read, nothing more. I'll pick up the two sequels once they come out.
I'm a fan of Sanderson and this is a classic Sanderson novel. Good characters, intricate setting, and a racing plot. One of my favorite things about his books is how he sets up a mystery for the characters to solve and effectively encourages the reader to do the same. Yet somehow, he always manages to stay one step ahead of me- I always think I know what the 'answer' is yet at the end, I'm always proven wrong and the real answer is far more interesting than what I expected. This happens again here and in hindsight there is plenty of cleverly hidden foreshadowing that would be rewarding to look through in a re-read.

Sanderson, I cannot believe you left me like that. I actually hit the rewind button to see if I had somehow missed something.
Otherwise everything about this was as amazing as I had hoped and expanded the world and did all the awesome Brandon Sanderson things I hoped it would. I laughed, I teared up, I was unnerved, I am ready for more.
I read this a while back. It may be even better than Skyward! The world really opened up and it's all cool. Lots of intrigue, action, and cool aliens. It's all on a steady YA level with humanoid aliens and no particularly dark themes. But it's pulled off well! The aliens are very creatively designed and made great use of in the plot. The drama is great too.
