Spring Snow (春の雪, Haru no Yuki) is a novel by Yukio Mishima, the first in his Sea of Fertility tetralogy. It was published serially in Shinchō from 1965 to 1967, and then in book form in 1969. Mishima did extensive research, including visits to Enshō-ji in Nara, to prepare for the novel.

The Spring snow is absolutely amazing. It’s so refreshing. I feel ashamed it took me so long to finish it. The novel is very rich, full of unexpected turns. I feel like it’s multiple novels inside of one—not so gently switching from one point of focus to another. I don’t think that calling it “Japanese Romeo and Juliet” gives it justice. It’s way more complex. I enjoyed every chapter of it. I sympathize with both Kiyoaki and Satoko—sometimes love is not obvious. It takes time to realize what one’s feel. It’s like a ballet. And master Mishima invites us to observe this tragic dance.
