Just got asked to sign an open letter to OpenAI asking for transparency on their announced restructuring. You’ll hear about it soon enough, no doubt, given some “big names” are attached to it.
While I agree with the premise of the letter, there’s no way I can sign it after seeing the level of cluelessness and perpetuation of harmful assumptions regurgitated in it. It’s depressing to see those supposedly pushing back against Big Tech’s AI grift having themselves accepted the core myths of this bullshit.
It starts:
“We write to you as the legal beneficiaries of your charitable mission.”
What charitable mission? Are you idiots? You’re talking to a ~$4B organisation.
“Your current structure includes important safeguards designed to ensure your technology serves humanity rather than merely generating profit…”
Oh, really, that’s news to me. I guess I must be missing how their current bullshit serves humanity.

You do understand that there is NO path that leads from today’s mass bullshit factories that are LLMs to AGI? None. Zero. Nada. You’re playing right into their hands by taking this as given.
“We believe your response will help restore trust and establish whether OpenAI remains committed to its founding principles, or whether it is prioritizing private interests over its public mission.”
What trust? You trusted these assholes to begin with why exactly? Was it the asshat billionaire founder? How bloody naïve can you be?
“The stakes could not be higher. The decisions you make about governance, profit distribution, and accountability will shape not only OpenAI's future but also the future of society at large.”
Please, sirs, be kind.
No, fuck you. Why are we pleading? Burn this shit to the ground and dance on its smoldering remains.
“We look forward to your response and to working together to ensure AGI truly benefits everyone.”

There was a time when it seemed trivial to me that human intelligence was computable, in the sense that it can be emulated in a computer. But the truth is that there seems to be a certain consensus among experts that it is not, that it is basically inseparable from our biology and social environment.
This article gives a good historical context to this issue from the point of view of the attempt to recreate intelligence in machines.

Entertaining but Predictable with Some Interesting Points

Content warning Significant plot elements
This was a bit of a different genre compared to Dennis E. Taylor's other books. Feeling-wise, I thought it was pretty similar to Roadkill, but a bit more in the direction of a serious sci-fi thriller.
The pacing was done quite well and I thought that the juxtaposition of artificial general intelligence and #genetic #engineering was interesting. He also makes a few interesting points regarding how a real #AGI might behave. The near-future #worldbuilding also deserves a shout-out for how well it painted the context of the novel to be the next logical step from where we're at right now technologically, with bonus points for how mundane the technologies seemed in the book.
On the whole, though, the plot felt formulaic and kind of predictable for me. The main antagonist also didn't really do it for me; I would have wished for more biting satire or more absurdity of caricature rather than the bland antagonist there was, although the blandness may have been the point in order to emphasize another point about the potential of #AI.
For all that complaining, I liked it and thought it was a useful contribution to all of the current discussion and hype around AI.
People are generally intelligent, right?
May I then point out the folly to waste all these countless billions on the development of flawed #AI. Wasting gazillion watts in hopes to create the first #AGI .. risking that it may destroy mankind.
Put that against, what, 7 billion #people operating at the singularity boundary of intelligence already.
Which we *alienate* from each other by AI. There is *severe stupidity* involved.
Use tech to unite people, lift up our thinking, reach new heights. ✊
