Brilliant

5 stars

Brilliant novel. This is my first "whodunit" and I loved it. The characters were very interesting and it was def a meta approach he took. It was extremely clever and had a lot of references to Agatha Christie. The first story captured the period well while aligning later with his second story. It is a solid read and I recommend.

Downloaded through Libby for my Kobo! Thought it was very appropriate for my time in Australia! Unsure if it has anything to do with Magpies but Magpies are super cool!! Been seeing a TON of them during holiday and excited to read for my retreat

Phenomenonal World Building

5 stars

Matt Dinniman does it again! Amazing world building, great new characters, and of course, craziness. 5th floor sucks for the characters though! Surprised Borant wanted to make it that difficult for the players. Its insane to think that many at all would have survived that. Narration is always top notch and I have been sucked into the world once again. Wonderful listen for my car rides to work and trip to Australia

Fantasy Can Be a Mirror for Reality

5 stars

Reading and finishing this book post-presidential election 2024 under the United States was very depressing as the themes of the book have and continue to be a reality. Prejudice and oppression of any sort should not be tolerated... And contrary to others beliefs non violence does not always work. One thing that I am glad TJ Klune does is not to pretend it is easy or shy away from hard truths. I keep wondering if a certain character visiting the island could have been changed... Just one person at a time but to Klunes point there will always be a subset of the population that feels hatred towards others that are different. We will need allies and to unite somehow. Going back to America... I'm not sure how when >50% voted for hate, fascism (gestepo level), and to be represented by a man who is not only a criminal but …

Dead, Death, Dying

4 stars

It is amazing how taboo death and dying is to American society and just people in general. There is a lot of fear in even using those words. People tend to shy away from the topic, going through many stages of grief and instead if not in denial, use words that make them feel better like "passing", "expired", etc. The book while slow, is excellently written and is a thorough exploration of grief, loss, death and guilt. I loved the interaction of the family and the observations and questions Elle has. They are all great characters. Some people complain about the ending but honestly 1) I think its good 2) Who says endings can't be short? Not all stories have to be action packed or eventful to be a great book. And honestly, its more realistic. Things happen when they happen. Overall, solid listen and worth IMO if you go …

Its a Story with Horror Roots

3 stars

Just finished reading. Its a short, fast read. This year, Ive read a lot of horror classics like Turn of the Key, The Haunting of Hill House, and ive watched my share of "paranormal horror" movies. Its an interesting and different story. The writing reads like the classic novels (writing style wise, not super detailed), characters are just solid enough, etc. I myself was not surprised by the end. Did not scare me but interesting enough story with more unique concepts.

New Classic

5 stars

Wow amazing reimagining of a classic. The writing, characters, story are all solid. The take away profound and powerful. I am so happy we moved past that time period where a lot of those awful stereotypes are debunked and blacks are no longer seen as valuable yet disposable vessels for labor (well not as bad, we still have the prison pipeline). While America has further to go we are making our way.
