The book is in between Alien & Aliens and the way it's set up, requires quite a bit of suspension of belief.

I have seen the movie many times in my childhood and thought to rekindle the awe from that time by reading the original book.
I was mistaken, the book and the movie are so far removed that they wouldn't even be recognized.
Where the contact and the machine were the story in the movie, in the book they are the vehicle for the actual story of exploring religion.

An interesting story about a a group of colonists moving to a different star system, but there has been changes in the target planet during the time of the travel.
Often short stories pack a punch due to their short form, but this felt kind of lackluster in that sense.

I enjoyed reading the 'Into the drowning deep' by Mira Grant, it felt like a good compromise between science and fiction. My only gripe is with the names of some of the characters which made it annoyingly difficult to follow the acting people in the audiobook version; Dr. Toth, Theo, Dr. Jillian, Mr. Blackwell
