Travis Baldree: Bookshops and Bonedust (Paperback, 2023, Tor Books) 4 stars

When an injury throws a young, battle-hungry orc off her chosen path, she may find …

A fun fantasy comedy that serves as a prequel to Legends and Lattes featuring a queer orc-dwarf relationship, a bookshop run by a rattkin, the pluckiest gnome you'll ever meet and, maybe my favorite character, a homunculus with some surprising abilities and great outlook on life.

Nothing too serious here. Just a good, fun, light read.

Premee Mohamed: The Annual Migration of Clouds (2021, ECW Press) 4 stars

In post-climate disaster Alberta, a woman infected with a mysterious parasite must choose whether to …

I saw "The Annual Migration of Clouds" by Premee Mohamed described as "hopepunk." Sure, but it is also has rage. A justified and righteous anger that is not so subtle. I'm not sure there is enough of that in post-apocalyptic stories. This passage sums it up:

"As we mine out the landfills (at least they left us a lot of plastic to reuse; that was thoughtful) and burrow into basements and archives seeking the books that our ancestors did not burn to survive the winters, you feel it sometimes, rage filling you like an updraft of hot air from a fire, lifting you from the shoulders or blowing through like a tornado -- rage that we missed it, missed it all, and rage at those who got to have it in the specific way that took it from us."

That last bit? Says it all.

A great new instalment in the Murderbot series. Murderbot is definitely going through some stuff, and very self-consciously making a hash of things, but prevails in the end. Yeah, Murderbot!

Also, still loving the “this is what the galaxy might look like if you give corporations free reign” commentary of the whole series.
