Akwaeke Emezi: You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty (2022, Atria Books)

I fail to see what it was that made the BookTube-literaty gush so much over this book.

I tend not to DNF books out of principle, as I've already invested precious time, and there's of course always the hope it'll get better eventually.

It doesn't with this one for me.

If you're into selfish individuals who don't care who they hurt as long as they get what they want, and you prefer it dragged out for as long as possible, then this is right up your alley and you're going to love it.

If you're reading this because of the older man/younger woman smutty romance trope that people seem to like, may I suggest you grab a Mills & Boon (or Harlequin if you're in the US) instead. It would make for a much more entertaining read. Probably better written as well.

I had just finished The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue when I decided to pick up ACOTAR as my next read. Obviously, with Schwab's gorgeous prose and fabulous character building still fresh in mind, my first Sarah J. Maas had something to live up to. All and sundry were talking highly about the 'fabulous fantasy books' of SJM though, so eventually I took the plunge and ordered the first 4 books in this series. I was actually looking forward to starting them, as well. Hindsight, eh?

Have read some Agatha Christie already, but never read her first one. Fixed that error now.

And as you can expect with Mrs Christie: it leaves you guessing till the end of the book, and somehow you still end up picking the wrong murderer! Reading Christie is always a joy ❤️

Julia Nobel: Secret of White Stone Gate (2020, Sourcebooks, Incorporated)

Review of 'Secret of White Stone Gate' on 'Goodreads'

I expected more from this sequel. The author probably planned on writing a part 3, but since that hasn't happened yet, the situation between Emmy and her father remains unresolved. Which is a bit of a bummer. Here's hoping for a part 3 that will conclude the story.
