I really loved this book in the end. I’m a huge fan of the writing style and prose in general.
I wasn’t vibing with the start of the book but I think the second half really complemented it and I really felt what Nevada was trying to convey.
The trans experience does have powerful, important moments but its not defined by the cisnormative view that we begin as one thing, go through a “transition period” and come out as completely different thing.
Being trans is an always thing, every moment of your existence is guided by the oppression you face, or the unique beauty of queerness. This book focuses on the way survival strategies forced upon us in childhood affect us as we grow up, prevent our development.
I think that aspect of it is brilliant.

I definitely had a lot of notes on the content, particularly in the first half. Heck the first page opens with kinky choking being done incorrectly (pressure on sides pls not trachea, that’s dangerous). I think the way trans men are talked about is kinda shit, and there is a lot of edgy stuff I didn’t agree with.
I really wasn’t sure what i was getting myself into or what direction the book was going to take, I honestly considered stopping many times, especially when Maria’s takes got kinda awful, but the quality of the writing and the writing style really kept me at it.
I’m really glad I finished it. This is art.
