Frustrated by her current relationship, trans lesbian Maria Griffiths decides to change her life by making some brash decisions and leaving New York behind on a road trip to reconsider her life and priorities.
One of the best books I have ever had the joy of reading.
Punch me full strength in the chest over and over again why don’t you
What a ride! Literally, as riding a bike through New York features prominently in the first part while the second part features a road trip. I found the beginning a bit too edgy for my taste but was quickly drawn in by the stream-of-consciousness like narration of Maria. It's like a really cool blog (which Maria also has). She has a lot of interesting but also amusing things to say. I also realy liked the interaction between her and James in the second part. The book is set in a nice time bubble when people had live journals and blogs and trans persons weren't yet public enemy No. 1 (however, the book makes it very clear that there's no reason to romanticise that era). It's a deep and compelling dive into trans experiences. Recommended!
I was put onto this by the Transfeminine Review, and goodness am I glad. Much of what it has to say about queer community and how it treats trans women is still relevant today, and there are times it felt like my life was put on the page- like someone had read my mind! Maria is a window into our community- its no wonder this was a breakout hit. She's not likeable, at times- just like me and the girls I know aren't. She's genuine and a better character for it, a reflection for the world to see, but more importantly for girls like us to see. It's not quite perfect- its a little overly self conscious and the writing can be emotionally disconnected- but at the same time that's very fitting for what Nevada is trying to be. Definitely recommend
The first few chapters I thought the writing style was pretty contrived...but it ends up really working the more you get to know Maria. Other than that, wow, it's amazing, it's great. I will probably read it again.

still puzzled figuring how to bookwyrm correctly, I wrote up my thoughts in a comment here: bookwyrm.social/user/tricia/comment/1975332
I really liked the parts that didn't feel like homework.
I really loved this book in the end. I’m a huge fan of the writing style and prose in general.
I wasn’t vibing with the start of the book but I think the second half really complemented it and I really felt what Nevada was trying to convey.
The trans experience does have powerful, important moments but its not defined by the cisnormative view that we begin as one thing, go through a “transition period” and come out as completely different thing.
Being trans is an always thing, every moment of your existence is guided by the oppression you face, or the unique beauty of queerness. This book focuses on the way survival strategies forced upon us in childhood affect us as we grow up, prevent our development.
I think that aspect of it is brilliant.
I definitely had a lot of notes on the content, particularly in the first …

I definitely had a lot of notes on the content, particularly in the first half. Heck the first page opens with kinky choking being done incorrectly (pressure on sides pls not trachea, that’s dangerous). I think the way trans men are talked about is kinda shit, and there is a lot of edgy stuff I didn’t agree with.
I really wasn’t sure what i was getting myself into or what direction the book was going to take, I honestly considered stopping many times, especially when Maria’s takes got kinda awful, but the quality of the writing and the writing style really kept me at it.
I’m really glad I finished it. This is art.
Great book about emotional seclusion. I think the most honest “on the road”-novel I ever read.
Some sentences/bits hit like a sledgehammer with regard to my own unresolved flaws
Easy read. Very conversational. I was trying to finish Valley of the Dolls and this reminded me of it in terms of style and uncovering a lifestyle.
Maria is at a bit of a dead-end working at a NYC bookshop. When she finds out her girlfriend cheated on her, she spends her meagre surgery savings on some drugs and steals her girlfriend’s car for a road trip to the pacific. On her way, she stops in Nevada and meets James, who she identifies as a fellow, but closeted, trans woman. This is very much a book that doesn’t give a flying shit about cis readers, or indeed any conventions and I love it for it.
I feel so seen.
Must read for everybody who is target audience of this book. You'll know it.
I picked this up after seeing it referenced a few time & felt like I was kinda missing a shared experience and wow I'm real glad I did. The characterisation felt like it was constantly calling me out in both parts and the story constantly got to me. Feeling a whole lotta ways after reading this, would recommend
I didn't like this book, but I think you should read it anyway.
