- Lily Mayer, The Atlantic

«La forza – enorme – di questo romanzo sta qui, nella capacità di Imogen Binnie di rendere una donna trans un personaggio del tutto normale, slegato, nel suo arco narrativo, dalla sua condizione di trans, e invece raccontato nella sua sola dimensione umana.» - Alessandro Tacchino per Maremosso

«Se Nevada ha un merito è quello di farci comprendere una volta di più che "il mondo non ha una norma: la vita va …

What a ride! Literally, as riding a bike through New York features prominently in the first part while the second part features a road trip. I found the beginning a bit too edgy for my taste but was quickly drawn in by the stream-of-consciousness like narration of Maria. It's like a really cool blog (which Maria also has). She has a lot of interesting but also amusing things to say. I also realy liked the interaction between her and James in the second part. The book is set in a nice time bubble when people had live journals and blogs and trans persons weren't yet public enemy No. 1 (however, the book makes it very clear that there's no reason to romanticise that era). It's a deep and compelling dive into trans experiences. Recommended!

A vital read to understand transfems and our literature.

I was put onto this by the Transfeminine Review, and goodness am I glad. Much of what it has to say about queer community and how it treats trans women is still relevant today, and there are times it felt like my life was put on the page- like someone had read my mind! Maria is a window into our community- its no wonder this was a breakout hit. She's not likeable, at times- just like me and the girls I know aren't. She's genuine and a better character for it, a reflection for the world to see, but more importantly for girls like us to see. It's not quite perfect- its a little overly self conscious and the writing can be emotionally disconnected- but at the same time that's very fitting for what Nevada is trying to be. Definitely recommend

Great book about emotional seclusion. I think the most honest “on the road”-novel I ever read.

Some sentences/bits hit like a sledgehammer with regard to my own unresolved flaws

I picked this up after seeing it referenced a few time & felt like I was kinda missing a shared experience and wow I'm real glad I did. The characterisation felt like it was constantly calling me out in both parts and the story constantly got to me. Feeling a whole lotta ways after reading this, would recommend

The opening scene of Nevada had me worried this wasn’t going to be my type of book, but first impressions aren’t always accurate. This was a very different kind of novel for me, one that stretched me as a reader.

I loved Maria’s snarky, apathetic tone and her dark humor. She shines a light on a lot of things that trans people have to worry about, stuff that seems minor or tedious to cis people, but are actually pretty demeaning. Maria is who she is, and you can’t help but have empathy for her and learn in a very natural way.

"Pretty much you have to prove that you’re totally normal and straight and not queer at all, so that if they let you transition you will be a normal het woman who doesn’t freak anybody out, and so we often, as individuals, internalize these things, and then we, as …
