The first story is a humorous immigrant poverty and internet-of-crap mashup that illustrates a social problem and explains a possible partial amelioration. The rest are darker, with less positivity and less humor as the author strains to deal with very near future fears that ring true enough. Needless to say, I enjoy Doctorow more for the former combo.
