The first part of the book tells the story of the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis mainly from an American perspective. This may sound off-putting to some, but it is quite exciting how Sega of America managed to increase the market share of Sega from 5% to over 50%.
The next part features blueprints and photos of the different versions of the console as well as accessory and game art. The selection of games may seem quite limited at first, but it does a perfect job of illustrating the third part of the book.

The book may not work perfectly as a coffee table book due to the limited selection of game art, but in my opinion it offers something even better: A great set of texts which explain why the Sega Mega Drive is a great game console with fantastic games that appealed to people who outgrew the kiddy image of earlier consoles.

Der Roman ist für heutige Leser eine Herausforderung: blumig, schwülstig, langatmig. Es wird in drei Abschnitten fast das komplette Leben des letzten Menschen erzählt, angefangen vor seiner Geburt bis zu seinem Aufbruch auf die Reise in die Einsamkeit. Manchmal fragt man sich, ob es nötig ist, jede Gefühlsregung der Hauptfigur und jedes Detail ihres Lebens zu kennen. Am Ende erhält aber vom Erzähler eine Erklärung für die ausschweifende Erzählung.
Der Untergangs der Menschheit macht ungefähr ein Drittel des Buches aus. Wer auf eine möglichst schockierende Schilderung der Pest wartet, wird höchstwahrscheinlich enttäuscht werden. Wer allerdings die zahlreichen Hinweise und das Nachwort von Rebekka Rohleder in der Reclam-Ausgabe liest und sich halbwegs in Mary Shelleys Biographie auskennt, wird für seine Mühen belohnt werden.

Ich war mit der Erwartung an das Buch herangegangen, dass es sich um einen Roman handelt, aber es ist fast ein Sachbuch, das durch eine Rahmenhandlung zahlreiche Informationsschnipsel zu einem stimmigen Ganzen zusammenfügt. Das Ende kam etwas schnell und überraschend und warum die beiden Freunde unbedingt einen Eishai fangen müssen, wird auch nicht wirklich überzeugend begründet. Insgesamt aber trotzdem ein schönes Buch, das ich gerne gelesen habe.
