A little difficult to get into at the start, turned a corner sharply and hooked me right to the end. An interesting use of ideas surrounding the history of language, of virtual and physical viruses, and the ‘metaverse’ seeing it’s first outing (before Facebook borrowed the name) - and a pair of protagonists who you find yourself desperately hoping will get to the source of the problem.

I picked this book up as a consequence of seeing the first episode of the Apple TV+ adaptation - and I couldn’t be more pleased. The pacing is perfect, keeping you constantly on your toes wondering what’s coming next, with the reveal of the truths about the existence of the Silo delivered at exactly the right times in the story. The characterisation is strong - and the lead character is one you truly root for.

A royally riveting read! The story uses elements from across this fantasy genre, but weaves them into a story of discovery, of reflection on what we truly know about our friends, and about how far we’d go to protect those who need it most. Particularly interesting is how much this story reinvigorates tales of witches and warlocks as part of the modern age, rather than the last decade’s primary outlet for this simply rehashing old tropes as tired secret school drama. I genuinely cannot wait for the next instalment!

As the Discworld enters the age of steam, Sir Terry crafts a tale of intrigue, of rebellion, and of the magic of technology. The reveal at the end of the tale dwarfs the main conflict, but highlights Sir Terry’s open-mindedness to the changing world; we get to see more facets of lesser characters, with most appearing more rounded. As a learner of Welsh, I found myself reading with accents in places!

I’ve read this book repeatedly. The lush descriptions of Languedoc serve as the perfect frame for two stories which take place in parallel, meeting expertly at the end of the book.
