Ashley Audrain: The Push (Hardcover, 2021, Pamela Dorman Books)

Review of 'The Push' on 'Goodreads'

I couldn't read this book in any less than 100-page sittings, it held my attention in a vice. It's been a while since I put a book down and counted down until I had time to pick it back up again. Disturbing plot, painful focus on where familial abuse/ legacies of trauma meet mental illness meet the rollercoaster of motherhood, wanted and not.

Seth Dickinson: The Monster Baru Cormorant (2019, Tor Books)

Even more sweeping and heart-wrenching than its 2015 prequel, The Monster Baru Cormorant is the …

DNF @50%- the audiobook narration is great, but this is the kind of intricate plot that I think is better suited for actually reading and not listening to. Also, the names are nearly impossible to keep track of while listening to the audio. Sorry, Baru! I'll see what dastardly deeds you're up to another time!

Seth Dickinson: The Traitor Baru Cormorant (2015)

The Traitor Baru Cormorant ( BAH-roo) is a 2015 hard fantasy novel by Seth Dickinson, …

Review of 'The Traitor Baru Cormorant' on 'Goodreads'

Wow. One of the best books I've read in a long time, with by far the most complicated protagonist I've ever read.

big tw for: homophobia, mentions of child sexual abuse, eugenics, conversion therapy, torture of gay characters

Akwaeke Emezi: Freshwater

Review of 'Freshwater' on 'Goodreads'

I read and loved [b:Pet|38612739|Pet|Akwaeke Emezi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1550603866l/38612739.SY75.jpg|60224408] years ago- Emezi's writing style is hypnotic.

Freshwater is an intense story about mental illness and trauma- big tw for: rape/ sexual assault, self-harm, suicide/ suicidal ideation, drug use & abuse, domestic violence. The audiobook is read by the author, which is something that always makes listening to an audiobook feel much more special.

Jonny Sims: Thirteen Storeys (2020, Orion Publishing Group, Limited)

Review of 'Thirteen Storeys' on 'Goodreads'

Jonny Sims says eviction is death! Jonny Sims says no war but the class war!

But no, really, this book is incredible. What if the scariest thing to exist, the rot at the center of it all, is capitalism?! How does it corrode everything it touches? How does trauma linger? Where does grief go? What does choice look like and can it even exist under oppression?

I listened to the audiobook version and the narration was incredible- I'm very familiar and love Sims' vignette style (full disclosure, I read this book in the wake of finishing his other work, [b:The Magnus Archives: Season 1|53840244|The Magnus Archives Season 1 (Magnus Archives, #1)|Jonathan Sims|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1591359764l/53840244.SX50.jpg|84167246]) and even though I've listened to all 200 episodes of TMA it still took me until the 4th chapter to realize that I should have start my mental yarnboard from the very beginning. The story and …
