Marc-Uwe Kling, Zachary Tallent: Qualityland (German language, 2020, Verlag Voland & Quist)

Review of 'Qualityland' on 'Goodreads'

Review of 'Behind Her Eyes' on 'Goodreads'

When a blurb on a book says "The most shocking ending you will read all year" and "Read it before someone tells you the ending" I am hooked. I saw "Behind her eyes" browsing in a store, bought it and, being curious, finished it today. The hefty promise it makes can only be kept if you don't know anything at all about the book and that includes the genre.

As soon as it is clear where the journey goes, the possibility of shocking endings are very limited,, especially if you read your share of horror and supernatural novels. The second twist comes a bit more surprising but gets also strong hints a few pages before the end (and of course from the title of the book itself).

As such, "Behind her Eyes" is not a bad book. It's a fast paced, entertaining read with engaging characters and a strong "villain". …

Grady Hendrix: Horrorstör (Paperback, 2014, Quirk Books)

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees …

Review of 'Horrorstor' on 'Goodreads'

One of the most clever horror novels I have read - and therefore I don't want to give away too much. Amy, an employee in an Ikea-like chain of furniture stores has to run a night-shift, something she is not much looking forward to. She hates her job and most of her co-workers and just agrees because she is offered a relocation. But strange things are going on in the dark...

The whole concept of Horrorstör manages to be both hilarious and actually really spooky. A book that becomes not only gradually more creepy because of the story but because of the book design. The idea is clever, well executed and smoothly written. I finished it in two sittings and hope we will get a movie version!

Review of 'The unit' on 'Goodreads'

Maybe it's because I read the two up so closely, but this book kind of felt like "The Handmaid's Tale" for the elderly mixed with "The Island" / "Jonas 7: Clone"

Dorrit lives in Sweden, in an undetermined future. Society sees the elderly only as a financial burden if they haven't shown their value in their past life, either by procreating or achieving great successes. Those who didn't manage after a certain age are marked "Dispensable" and brought to "The Unit" where they live the rest of their life. Dorrit, a writer without a family, is one of the Dispensables and the novel starts with her move. "The Unit" is a resort, where she and other "Dispensables" have access to all luxuries of life and no more duties - except participating in medical experiments and donating, bit by bit, their organs to people who are more valuable to society, until …

Matt Ruff: Bad Monkeys (2008, Bloomsbury)

Bad Monkeys (2007) is a psychological thriller novel by Matt Ruff. It received mixed reviews …

Review of 'Bad Monkeys' on 'Goodreads'

I had mixed experiences with Matt Ruff books before. The acclaimed "Fool on the Hill" completely left me unfazed and rather confused, I tried several times to end it and at last sold it without having even read half of it. "Set this House in order" was the opposite: it completely enthralled me and I finished it in the matter of a few hours, re-reading it several times afterwards. "Bad Monkeys" was something in between. The first three quarters or so it absolutely captivated me and I enjoyed the fast paced plot, the characters, the sillyness and the pop-cultural jokes. But then Matt Ruff somehow went all M. Night Shyamalan - looking for the big thrill he drowned the ending in a maze of twists.

While I found those in "Set this house in order" well crafted, genuinely surprising, touching and making me want to read the book again, here they …

Becky Chambers: A Closed and Common Orbit (Hardcover, 2016, HODDER & STOUGHTON)

Once, Lovelace had eyes and ears everywhere. She was a ship's artificial intelligence system - …

Review of 'A Closed and Common Orbit' on 'Goodreads'

I tore through the paperback in only two days as it combined two genres I really like: sci-fi and the upbringing of "feral" children. At first I was a bit disappointed that this book was not about the crew of the Wayfarer (or at least not all of them) but that quickly wore off because, like the first book, it was such an engaging read. It is told from two changing perspectives in two different times and still manages to keep up a steady pace and not get confusing. Again I was impressed by Chambers' skill in worldbuilding and character composition. And am looking forward to her next work, wherever it will take place!

Becky Chambers: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2014)

Review of 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet' on 'Goodreads'

I can only recommend this to people who enjoy solid sci-fi paired with interesting, believable characters. The first book for ages that engulfed me so thoroughly and made me care so much about a fictional group of people. I also like that Chambers' aliens are not just humans with scales or antennaes and her take on artificial intelligence. After listening to the audiobook I immediately started with the sequel and hope there will be more to come.
