Reading since I was conceived. 'Professional book reviewer'. My opinions about books are very important. If I say the book is shit, the book is shit, no further debate needed. Believe me bro. Sarcastic when needed. No, sarcasm is not hostiliy masked in humor, who said that? Don't believe them, they take you for fool.

Priscilla Cogan: Stara pajkovka (Paperback, slovenian language, 2005, Nova Gorica : Eno, cop.)

Najhitreje 'prebrana' knjiga.

Zgodba o ločeni psihoterapevtki in indijanski šamanki, razvlečen kolaž ameriških klišejev in stereotipov. Malo me je spominja na 'Ženske, ki tečejo z volkovi', vendar plehka, kot bi gledal kakšno 'Good Witch' serijo, kjer je vse lepo in dobro in ves čas v ozadju igra prijetna glasba in če so že problemi, jih junaki rešijo in zmagajo. Castaneda bi tudi privzdignil obrvi. Do 100-te strani sem potrpežljivo čakal, da me pritegne, vendar me je vedno bolj odbijala in puščala praznega. Polnilo na polnilo, stil: doktor roman. Nato sem imel dovolj, preletel do konca in verjetno nisem ničesar bistvenega izpustil.

reviewed Zgodbe za lažji konec sveta by Tomo Podstenšek (Zbirka Kratke, #1)

Nekatere so ohlapno povezane, preko kakšnega dogodka, predmeta. Njegove kratke zgodbe me bolj pritegnejo, kot romani. Kaj pa vem, zakaj. Morda zaradi raznolikosti in ker so 'straight to the point'. Skoraj vse se zaključijo presenetljivo. Še več, nekatere so krožne - konec je povezan z začetkom. Vse so mi dale misliti.

commented on Hold Up the Sky by Liu Cixin

Liu Cixin: Hold Up the Sky (Paperback, 2020, Head of Zeus)

Collection of imaginative science fiction by Cixin Liu, translated from Chinese.

Stories included are:

  • The …

Until now I liked the best the following 2 short stories: - Village teacher - Sea of dreams Not my cup of tea: Full Spectrum Barrage Ramming.

I still like that every story is built around a central astrophysics phenomena. I found out that many ideas from these stories are later re-used in the Three body problem. Or maybe it was vice-versa?

The strong point of stories is that they induce a strong feeling of hopelessness in me.

(slovenian language, 2024, Beletrina)

walking-good, being a drunk and bohemic-not so

The 'walking' part is poetic and a nice read. I can't identifiy with the narrator constant drinking and attitude towards women. A bohemic and drunk life is not romantic as someone might imagine. It's also not the hard way. The hard way of living is to accept the responsibility (if you decided to have a family) and live in the system. If you don't want responsibility, then don't make a family, and no one will get hurt, as simple as that. Damn, I sound like old people.

Nick Cave, Sean O'Hagan: Vera, upanje in pokol (Hardcover, slovenian language, 2024, Učila international)

Kill yourself or talk about the pain. Govori o bolečini ali umri.

It's rare to see a man talk openly about his vulnerabilities, personal faith, mourning and creativity process. It's far more common for a man to drug himself to death than to talk about the pain. That's why we need such books.

Could be shorter, it starts repeating after 3/4.

reviewed Ball Lightning by Liu Cixin

Liu Cixin: Ball Lightning (2018, Head of Zeus)

Ball Lightning (Chinese: 球状闪电) is a hard science fiction novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin. …

Physics (scifi part) great, relationships less so.

I found the physics-related ideas very exciting, although probably not true. It doesn't matter. Good sci-fi aims to excite the mind, and this book achieved that. In several places of this book I thought: "I've never thought this way." Physics-related parts are mind-provoking. I found social and relationship parts less so. It's too bad that the author confirms man-woman stereotypes such as: woman will cry even if previously shown as a strong character, and men will never show tears. This can be quite damaging (to men), maybe it's related to the author's cultural background. The sci-fi ideas are further developed in his 3body problem.
