When his wife is murdered on his wedding day, Lucas Trask launches himself on a quest for revenge. Using his personal fortune, he buys a spaceship and becomes a Space Viking, raiding worlds while hunting for his wife's killer. But raiding is not his destiny, and he gradually becomes a trader, starting to build a galactic empire. Before he can achieve his new goals, however, he must still deal with his wife's killer. A thrilling intergalactic saga!

Probably more in the 3.5-3.75 range.
I was worried in the first 10-15 pages, it was feeling a little clunky, but after that it moved along at a pretty fast clip.
A don't want to call this entry in H. Beam Piper's Federation timeline a standard 60s space opera, though I did think that's what I was in store for. As we follow the main character Trask from an initial revenge tail into a more 'rebuilding of civilization' yarn we also get into a lot of politics. While not as intricate, if for no other reason than being much more brief, than Herbert's Dune in universe political discourse I think fans of the latter will find something to enjoy here. Otherwise, just enjoy the good old fashioned space combat or world building stuff if those are your bag.
I know there's a lot of criticism of Piper and his views …

Review of 'Space Viking' on 'Goodreads'

Review of 'Space Viking' on 'GoodReads'

Shallow, reasonable paced entertaining story, could be used for a television series.
Typical stupid ideas from the USA culture: it is OK to bomb, raid and rape people from other societies, as long as yours is more advanced; democracies will fail, and the population must arm it self, governments should intervene as little as possible.
A few women in this book are there to be pretty and loved, beside these, women are seen as objects to be used for pleasure of the crew.
