Well, this was amazing. But amazing in a literary way, so I understand why this book would not be for everyone. It has a couple major barriers: 1) heavy use of patois 2) dense Jamaican politics. I was googling a lot in the first 50+ pages for a better understanding of both of those things. I thought I'd be at a disadvantage because I am not that familiar with Bob Marley or reggae, but this book is really not about him. It uses the attempt on his life to talk about a LOT of other things.

I started this book in an effort to tackle longer books in my TBR that I was not picking up. I read it over a month, interspersing other shorter and easier reads. That was the right way to go because I feel like I was able to take my time with it and appreciate …

All I knew about this was that it won the Man Booker Prize & it was about the attempted assassination of Bob Marley.

It turns out that Marley is merely a void around which a portion of the book circles. Eventually it is apparent that The Singer (as he's called) is really incidental to the story that James wants to tell.

It's Grahame Greene by way of James Ellroy. Multiple POVs, strong dialect. It's a profane, violent, shocking look at third world slums and American Imperialism.

It's an absolutely brilliant book.

Now to go read his other work.

What we have here is a failure to edit!

One of the most tedious books I've ever read, makes me wonder if Mr Man Booker actually reads this nonsense. The writing is all over the place, back and forth and repeating bits and repeating bits. At times I started to get angry that I was having to read things from the point of view of somebody who had nothing to give to the story. It felt like the author was only interested in getting up his page count and had very little interest in the story. It's not all bad though, the author seems to wake up during scenes of violence, as somebody is getting tortured or there is a shoot-out he suddenly develops a bit of passion and gets a few good pages out... unless I'm just really dark and a bit violent.... In fact its a bit like …

Brilliant work on the way violence works. Gang violence is Jamaica escalating when local, and later international, politicians and crime organizations, exploit it for their own needs. The exploitation is mutual though - crime lords attempt to make use of their position as these controlling violent groups in order to gain political and economic power. The problem is that the escalation cannot be controlled by anybody. While each of the book protagonists feels in control, none of them is.

Best book I've read all year. Just so so good. Damn!

Not for the faint of heart or the easily shocked and offended for sure. I had no problem with the Jamaican patois, though, I guess if you listen to this instead of reading it, it may be difficult. An epic tale with a great cast of characters. Never for a minute boring. Oh my god I loved this book. My thoughts are all awhirl!

This was tough to start with, not because of the patois or the multi-character structure, but because it's hard to understand what all the stories have to do with each other or what's really going on. At times the violence is so overwhelming that I had to take a break from reading. However it all becomes much easier and quite engrossing by the end. The hard work pays off when you see the full scope of the story; the result is quite powerful.
