Having read John Green's books in a rather haphazard order I've gotten used to his way of ending stories with hope sans joy, but Looking For Alaska was too much of an emotional gut punch. If this was his first book, I'm not even slightly surprised he's had the successful career he's had since. It's just beautiful.
I grabbed this off my virtual to read pile feeling like the mild annoyance of a John Green story was pretty much what I wanted. I didn't check what the hell this one was about again, briefly confused it with Paper Towns, and was thus completely unprepared for a main character dying tragically!
What I dislike about this is all the guys..... I just hate reading John Green's characters being sexist all the time. Yeah I would agree that this is..... worked through..... in this story. But it's just draining. And I do dislike some fundamental principles of this story, too.
Still this is the John Green book I liked the most so far. (Although to be fair I read that one really really sad one before I found my appreciation for stories like that.) It's sad and painful, still the ~whimsical~ vibe that I think John Green goes for …

For once I wasn't annoyed by pretentious quotes, I think they fit in pretty well. And sure Alaska is pixie-dreamgirled by her friends, but I think this is actually subverted pretty well.
I did occasionally feel like I was too old or too exhausted for such a tragic "sometimes people die and it's not even just that" story, like, I don't have the energy to be devastated with all those characters. But I also stayed up late almost finishing a 1000 pieces puzzle while listening to this so I think I liked it. (Although I did start working on the puzzle to calm down, initially.)
Writing style: not bad, but somewhat disjointed at times
Dialogue: excellent
Characterization: all right, but ultimately not that likeable ... I wish they had a few more redeeming qualities
Plot: not the greatest, but better than other John Green books

Alaska is the beautiful girl that Miles has a crush on and I can see why; she is a great character. She is an outspoken book nerd who, while she can get rather emotional, is the kind of female friend every high school boy dreams of having; obsessed with sex, flirting and teasing but ultimately one of the guys. But the thing I liked about Miles and Alaska (as well as the other characters) is their emotions and the way they act seem so familiar. It is easy to connect and understand what they are going through. It is hard to get the emotions right, and make them feel real; I know most YA books miss this completely but John Green makes it look so easy.
I really connected with Looking For Alaska, and I could probably talk about the awkwardness of the characters (including the awkward blow job), the views on religion and philosophy and even the pranks and mischief they get up to; but I will leave that for the readers to discover. I think the main thing I took away from this book is the fact that John Green wrote a book exactly like the stories I’ve attempted to write when I was in high school. The feeling of loneliness, being a geek, having a crush; Green captured this perfectly and he showed me how an expert writes a YA book about love and lost. I know I’ve been on a bit of a John Green kick lately, I’ve even been watching his YouTube channel constantly but I don’t think this will stop anytime soon, I can’t wait to read another one of his books.

I guess it’s mostly that i’m to old for YA.
But i also hated that everybody smoked. I don’t want anti-tobacco pamphlets, but can we please have the characters just not pointlessly poison themselves‽
A beautiful story of a group of teens who, through tragedy, try to find the answer to the question, "How will we ever get through this labyrinth of suffering?" This book also reminds us of the power (and necessity) of believing in the Great Perhaps.
Alaska, Miles (Pudge), and the Colonel, along with the other vividly depicted characters in this novel, capture the teen experience in a thoughtful and subtle way. I will probably give my future children this book to read in the hopes that they will think before making potentially life-altering decisions.
