Siccome la vita di Kabi Nagata non si è beatamente avviata verso la felicità dopo il successo di La mia prima volta e come il finale speranzoso di questa opera sembrava far presagire, inizierò questa recensione facendole dei complimenti che non leggerà mai: sei stata proprio brava, Nagata. Hai davvero scritto un libro che ci fa chiedere con che coraggio sei riuscita a pubblicarlo. Sono così ammirata dal tuo coraggio che pure io ho speso dei soldi per leggere la tua storia – e nonostante l’avessi già letta dopo averla presa in prestito.

La mia prima volta è il racconto (autobiografico) di una persona che si perde lungo la strada della vita: finisce le superiori, sembra avviata nel classico percorso che la porterà alla laurea, ma qualcosa si rompe. Nagata lascia l’università e, senza sapere nemmeno bene come, vedrà la sua salute mentale deteriorarsi sempre di più.

Il racconto di Nagata passa quindi a mostrarci le difficoltà di navigare la vita con delle malattie mentali che non vengono prese sul serio dalla sua famiglia, che la allontanano da ogni rapporto sociale e che le rendono impossibili tutte quelle attività, come il lavoro, considerate il segno di una persona adulta e responsabile. Non c’è nessuna romanticizzazione dell’abisso nel quale Nagata si trova a precipitare: opporsi è difficile e ancora di più è capire come ci è caduta.

Parallelamente ai suoi tentativi di essere un essere umano funzionante, infatti, Nagata cerca di capire quale sia l’origine del suo malessere. La trova? Chissà: la cosa importante, forse, è che nel tentativo di trovare il bandolo della matassa scopre vari aspetti interessanti di sé, dà un’interpretazione diversa di alcuni eventi del suo passato e riesce a fare nuove esperienze che espandono il suo mondo. Una di queste sarà proprio quella che dà il titolo al romanzo grafico: la sua prima esperienza sessuale che le permetterà di esplorare il suo corpo e i suoi desideri.

Come ho detto all’inizio di questa recensione, questo non la porterà automaticamente a una vita tutta rose e fiori: non è così che funziona con le malattie mentali – ma nemmeno con la vita in generale. Non ho ancora letto le sue opere successive, ma già i titoli rendono evidente che il percorso di vita di Nagata è tutt’altro che una comoda gita. Assomiglia più a una scalata dell’Himalaya senza attrezzature professionali e senza particolari competenze. Quindi: coraggio, Nagata! Metticela tutta!

This was my second time reading it, so it was interesting to see how different my relation to the story would be. It is still remarkably relatable and touching. If you are going through some hard times or you know someone who is, then maybe the author's experiences with her own difficulties of trying to connect with people and fulfill social expectations will give some insight. I also think the problems she discusses are much more widespread in society than many believe, but a lot of people who are affected can't talk about it due to various stigmas, so it's good that she was brave enough to share her story. While it already won a bunch of awards, I still think it's not known widely enough, especially outside the anime/manga sphere. Even if you've never read a manga or graphic novel before, I recommend checking out this one. It's short, but packs a lot of feelings into its 140-ish pages.

It's a life story of someone, but it just spoke to me directly and made me happy and anxious. It was hard to see someone who exposed, lonely, depressed and having problems finding a personality. I wasn't expecting to feel that close to this person and have the same feelings. All of us get through things like identity issues, finding a meaning in life, social interactions, depression and being a person in a society surrounded by the norms for centuries. These problems affect all of us and still affecting us. Trying to be a person to have a discrete identity, having a meaning in life and not just living by what others tell and did is just a hard thing to do. And we all at some point feel lost in these problems, and I think it's natural because without asking and questioning the things we love, and we want, requires being out of the norm, being alone. Without getting out of the way of living people say to us, we can't find a meaningful way to live as we want, we can't have a discrete, unique identity, we can't have meaning and will to live. I hope all the hard times he had gives us meaningful results. It made me happy to see I'm not alone and gave me hope to live and get through these hard times. I feel like this book become my friend and I will read this book when I feel the same feelings. It's such an honest and brave piece of art.
