I tend to avoid Oprah's darlings because they often take themselves too seriously, pretend to have everything figured out, and act as if the world is their ministry, all of which turns me off. I've lumped Glennon Doyle into this camp since she first crossed my radar as a "Christian Mommy Blogger" (three words that, even without Oprah's endorsement make me vomit) a decade or so ago, shining a spotlight on her "perfect" family and marriage with quotes that were ready-made needlepoint affirmations.

And yet... I've heard great things about this book, so when I was browsing the library's list of available audiobooks and spotted it, I decided (against my long-held bias) to give it a go. And you know what? It was solid. She might be a bit too "life coach with a megaphone" for my taste, but she's a good writer and storyteller, and she puts into words …

"The braver I am, the luckier I get." Glennon Doyle

She was (is?) a Mommy blogger who divorced her husband after finding true love with Abby Wambach. The book is a collection of, well, blogs about various subjects which she all ties in to not living according to society's expectations. I think I'd have been happy if it were 30% shorter, but it was vaguely inspiring and there were some interesting stories. She skims the surface a little too much, though, to make it truly worthwhile. And I feel for the reviewer who said it's like Lean In advice... not going to work for everyone.

meh, there were some great points made but I found it just turned into a bitch fest about life. Maybe it's because I'm not religious so I found those part painful to get through. I think this book is a bit too reliant on current issues and I am sure it will fade away over time instead of inspire people to be better. Oh well it was short enough that I didn't feel like it was a total waste

I went into this book not expecting much—just another memoir with some relatable stories and that’s it. Totally surpassed my expectations. I finished this book with so many tools I can use in my life to make it more meaningful, to stay more true to myself.

My only real gripe with it was that sometimes the tone got a little... weird. I know she couldn’t fit an entire conversation or thought flow into a chapter, but sometimes it came off as “pretty present wrapped up in a bow.” The conversations she had with her kids or Abby or Craig were like polished monologues that succinctly described the lesson she was trying to get across, which didn’t seem to fit the theme of the book.

Overall, an excellent book that tbh I’ll probably buy just to revisit every so often.
